Castle of Cagliostro, The
Miyazaki directed and co-wrote the screenplay to light-hearted action romp The Castle of Cagliostro which brilliantly combines comedy, snappy dialogue, fun characters, great visuals and fast-paced chase sequences. Master thief Lupin III and his right-handed gunman Jigen are hot on the trail of a counterfeiter who has swindled them. Their search leads them to the secluded European country of Cagliostro, where they find more than they bargained for. Lupin unwittingly attracts the attention of the nationís mysterious monarch, the evil Count Cagliostro, when he tries to help a damsel in distress escape and in the process stumbles upon the key to find the lost fortune of the Cagliostro clan. Lupin III is an extremely popular franchise in Japan that has seen the creation of a manga series, several TV series, films and TV movies. Miyazaki and Takahata even worked together on a TV series of Lupin III in the early seventies before this film was made.
